Having read THHGttG as a kid in the U.S., it took me several years before I realized that a "zebra crossing" was the same thing as a crosswalk. I also thought that Arthur Dent had been forced to wander into the basement of the planning office carrying a fire-burning "torch" as opposed to an electric one (a flashlight).
